Callow Hill 15 November 2008 8 km (5 miles)

This ramble was the first for the 2008/9 season and proved the be challenging with 2 accents of Callow Hill Summit and a total climb of 370 metres (1200 ft)
Leaving Sidcot School via Newcombe Lane, crossing Tom's Field and entering the Combe. Taking the path up the Combe to Winscombe Drove, crossing the drove and taking the path up onto Callow Drove. Following the track South alongside the west side of the quarry until the track turns East, continuing South taking the footpath downhill towards Axbridge. Where the path turns right continue to the next hollow, then taking the path to the right back up onto Callow Hill and back to Callow Drove. Turning left (West) along the drove descending down to Shute Shelve. At the made up private drive cross to the footpath to the right, following the path (Winscombe Drove). Continuing up the drove and at the top of the combe on the right, take the style on the right and follow the combe down to the right of the farmhouse, continuing over the style to take the path over the style on the right. Continuing along the path until reaching Oakridge Lane, returning back to Sidcot School

Sandford Hill 1st March 2008 5 Miles

This walk is the 2nd Ramble to take in Sandford Hill.

Leaving Sidcot School via Oakridge Lane, cross the A38 into Hillyfields. Take the FP to the right beside a bungalow and descend the hill and cross a field. In the 2nd field take a bearing to the NW Corner and enter Shipham Lane. Turn left and then take the next right. At the end of the lane take the FP west and then follow the FP east up Sandford Hill and along the ridge to the eastern end. Take the track SW towards Star, reaching the A38 just east of the Star Inn. Cross the A38 and take the lane SE up towards Shipham. Emerging around the cottages into Shipham Lane. Turn right and proceed for 100 metres or so and take the FP to the left. Follow the FP progressively round to the right (W) to reach Winterhead. Turn left and after 50 metres turn right through the gate at Winterhead Farm. Pass through the paddock and cross The Avenue and follow the FP across 2 fields to emerge over an elevated stile into a 3rd field. Turn right and follow the hedge and pass into the next field keeping the line to the right of the copse of trees. Pass though the gate into Tom's field, cross the field and pass into Newcombe Lane. Walk down the lane to reach Oakridge Lane returning to the Start Point.

Kings Wood 9 Feb 2008 5 Miles

From Sidcot School take Oakridge Lane south to Oakridge Close and take the FP to the right of Oakridge Lane. Continue along the FP across the road and continue to a cross FP and turn right. Continue until reaching the A38. Cross the A38 and take Fullers Lane until reaching a FP on right. Take the FP to reach the Strawberry Line Path and turn left. Continue to the south end of Shute Shelve Tunnel and a little beyond taking a path on right to go back up above the tunnel and Kings Wood. Pass into Kings Wood and take the path to the left-south and continue below the hill until reaching a bottom of the Wavering Down Ridge. Turn right up the ridge and continue the bearing until meeting the gate in the wall at Hill Farm, below the summit of Wavering Down. Pass through the gate and continue down the hill until reaching Winscombe Church. Pass through the churchyard and continue along the approach lane to Church Road. Turn left North and continue to Eastwell Lane and turn right. Continue along the lane to take the FP on right. Follow the FP into the wood and cross the brook and cross 4 fields to reach Yadley Lane. Enter the lane and turn left then right to reach the Strawberry Line Path and enter the recreation ground. Take the FP at the end of the recreation ground to the north side and continue to the A38 at Fountain Lane junction. Proceed along Fountain Lane to reach the starting point.
